| Review: | Helmets off to the city of Chula Vista for stepping up to the plate and building a fine skatepark for the skateboarders of SoCal. The Staff is way cool, the vibe is good, but you need to pay to play. Here are the details:
The Chula Vista Skatepark is huge and has 4 separate areas.
Near the entrance of the skatepark is a wooden ramp/rhythm section that is a good area for beginners and the street oriented skater. The ramps are the same ramps used at the 2003 California Adventure X-Games Experience.
Here is the smaller of the two reservoir sections, the lower reservoir which has 4' to 6' banks and a pyramid.
Lower Reservoir The transitions at the bottom of the banks are a bit harsh and do give you the feeling that you are actually skating in a real reservoir (Good Thing/ Bad Thing - you make the call). This section is definitely skateable for the older dudes like me to bust out some slides and do some serious carving as well as a decent skateable terrain for a beginner to learn the basics.
The upper reservoir section is huge with large banks ranging from 3' to 9' in size.
Upper Reservoir To a transition skateboarder, this section looks quite cool at first glance. Unfortunately, during your first few runs you will realize that the flow within the area is not the best as it is difficult to maintain speed when trying to draw lines going from bank to bank. One-time hits for grinds and airs on the large banks are definitely possible but hitting them all with some speed will take some good initial speed and some legs.
Surrounding the upper reservoir are ledges, fun-boxes, rails, a lot of free flowing crete, and a 2-stair, 4-stair, and 8-stair.
Street Elements My hunch is that a majority of the skaters who will be skating at this skatepark will be hanging around the periphery of the upper reservoir barging the street terrain.
At the back of the skatepark is a terraced Peanut Bowl. The 6' shallow-end of the bowl is actually about 4' higher in elevation than the 8.5' deep-end of the bowl.
Peanut Bowl This being the case you need to work for speed coming back to the shallow from the deep. What were they thinking? This been said, I actually liked this bowl. The concrete is smooth and fast, the coping is affixed correctly for the most part, and the transitions are decent. Inverts, airs, hip airs, escalator 50-50s, huge carves, and grinds are yours for the choosing.
The skatepark has lights so night sessions are on for you San Diego dudes. Also, the skatepark will soon also have a fully stocked Utility Board Skateshop. How many skateparks have a skateshop. Very cool. The skateshop should be open sometime in late October or early November. The restrooms are clean and there is even a snackbar to get some grub after a long session.
Note: In 2006 a 6 foot mini, 4 foot mini, street course and kids section have been added to the Chula Vista Skatepark.
Bottom Line: Nice addition to the skateparks currently available in San Diego. Considering what could have been shaped with all of this concrete, I was somewhat dissapointed that the Skate Gods were not guiding those designing and pouring this skatepark a bit more closely. As always, you be the judge.-MH-

Skateparks are becoming more common as Skateboarding grows as a sport in Southern California. A Skatepark Directory such as SoCal Skateparks can help you to find the best Skateboard Parks in Southern California. We have put this Skatepark Directory together so that skateboarders in Southern California can find skateboard parks easier. Skateparks are important to the foundation of skateboarding. In order for skateparks to remain vibrant in SoCal we have to do our best to make sure that the skateparks that are built here are going to be skateparks that our children will want to skate 20 years from now. We want this to be your first choice skatepark directory and hope that all of the skateparks listed here will help you to find your way.
