| Review: | San Diego County is home to the vast majority of pro vert skaters making the Encinitas Skatepark a perfect fit for the premiere vert skatepark in Southern California. The skatepark is now home to the 2003 X-Games vert ramp which is one of the largest vert ramps build to date.
X-Games Vert Ramp
Here are the dimensions for the vert ramp:
- 13' with 2-feet of vert
- 12-foot-wide, 20-foot-high roll-in
- 15-degree hip
- 160 feet in length, including the roll-in
The 11' backyard pool style kidney is perfect and is by far the best skatepark pool that SoCal has probably ever seen. The shallow is 7' and with fairly mellow transitions which leads into the 32' diameter 11' with 2' of vert deep end. There is a death box in the deep and 2 concrete steps with tiles in-between that are extremely rippable and do not hinder lines throughout the pool. The tile is black and the coping is set perfectly!! Witnessing Kevin Staab blast a 6' to 7' backside ollie in this thing tells all - need I say more.

The combination bowl has a 6' square with perfect corners, 9' slightly over-overt bowl, and a 9' bowl with perfectly set pool coping and tile all around. The hip between the oververt bowl and the square and the hips in the 9' bowl are perfect for blasting transitional airs. There is a slight waterfall in the 9' bowl that slows you down a little but overall the combination bowl is a blast to skate. To me, skating it sort of reminds me of a combination of skating the Glendale Skatepark combi-bowl and the Clairemont Skatepark pool.

The skatepark also features a wood street/flow course that was designed and constructed by Team Pain. This section of the skatepark features some unique pyramids, rails, 1/4 pipe trannies, vert walls, ollie gaps, and other interesting terrain. Since the other sections of the skatepark are for advanced skateboarding, this will most likely be the most utilized section of the skatepark for beginning skateboarders. The street flow course has a great setup for kids learning how to skate as well as for intermediate skaters and veteran street park skaters.
Street/Flow Section
Bottom Line: The YMCA Magdalena Ecke seemed to do everything possible to make their skatepark the premiere vert SoCal Skatepark to date including:
- Hooking up with one of the premiere skatepark design firms Site Design Group and having them both design and build the skatepark!
- Working with Team Pain to build the wood street/flow course and incorporating the 2003 Team Pain designed vert ramp into the design of the skatepark.
- Teaming up with local pros like Chris Miller, Lance Mountain, Brian Howard, and many others to help design the kidney pool and combination bowl.
The skatepark rocks big time!! Road trip worthy 4-SURE. Go get some when you get a chance.

Skateparks are becoming more common as Skateboarding grows as a sport in Southern California. A Skatepark Directory such as SoCal Skateparks can help you to find the best Skateboard Parks in Southern California. We have put this Skatepark Directory together so that skateboarders in Southern California can find skateboard parks easier. Skateparks are important to the foundation of skateboarding. In order for skateparks to remain vibrant in SoCal we have to do our best to make sure that the skateparks that are built here are going to be skateparks that our children will want to skate 20 years from now. We want this to be your first choice skatepark directory and hope that all of the skateparks listed here will help you to find your way.
